« Back to basics »
En novembre 2023 La BVOT et son président Pr Plasschaert proposerons : « Back to basics The Spine »
En novembre 2024 La SORBCOT et son vice-président actuel Dr Lefebvre proposerons : « Back to basics the upper extremity »
Et ensuite en fonction de l’évolution « Back to basics Trauma » « Back to basics Paediatrics » …mais là je m’avance…

Lettre du Président à la société ukrainienne d'orthopédie
To The President and members of the Ukrainian Orthopaedic and Trauma Association
Dear Colleagues,
We would like to extend our sympathy to you. We share the pain of the Ukrainian Nation following the dramatic current attacks your country is facing. We hope that our Ukrainian orthopedic colleagues have not been affected on a personal, family or friendly basis. We realize how difficult is your actual situation and how complex it will become in the near future. Many belgian hospitals, and in first line, the Military Hospital Queen Astrid, are ready to help your members in achieving care to injured patients after transfer in Belgium.
Transmit the support of SORBCOT to all ukrainian orthopedic and trauma surgeons.
With best regards,
Dr Nanni Allington Dr Bernard Lefebvre

Discours de la nouvelle présidente Nanni Allington
Orthopaedica Belgica 2021: notre centenaire!
Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends,
I am quite honoured to become the president of our society, and to be the first « lady » president.
Let us start with a round of applause for the two presidents of the BVOT, Dr Jan Noyer and the SORBCOT one Pr Munting. They did a tremendous job of maintaining high quality meetings virtual or hybrid despite the difficult conditions due to the pandemic.
And I hope that Pr Plasschaert will be able to have a full face to face Orthopaedica Belgica meeting in Bruges in May 2022!
Having to review a part of the beautiful historical book of Pr Jean Jacques Rombouts, I made a joke about the fact that the new century will start with a woman. He took me quite seriously and searched for women who contributed to our society. And there is already a doctor Jeanne Verschueren, the first women surgeon in Belgium. She did her training in the department of Dr Lambotte!
There was also a lady who became vice-president…unfortunately…but more to read in the book...
So in all our meetings I see more and more about new technologies, new techniques, more computers, more artificial intelligence…And do not get me wrong, of course all these have bought a lot of improvements…and like Darwin said : it is not the strongest who survives but the one who adapts…
This being said, as you know I am also a professional pilot…and I would like to get your attention to the fact that the « full trust in technology » has brought a serious issue. Now I make it quite simple and it is of course quite more « complicated »… Pilots were trained at one point that « do not touch the plane it flies better than you… » and that ended up with the Rio-Paris flight…Well one major issue was that the training/teaching was not appropriate and a 180 degree turn was made with a « back to basic » …learning to fly manually and a proper training of the use of technology.
The instructional course of November 2022 will thus be a « back to basics »: importance of history and physical before MRI, whatsapp and so on…Also the place of conservative treatment, not only casting but also articulation preservation. Osteotomies?
And I also have another hat…I am since now 10 years the Belgian delegate to the UEMS orthopaedic section designated by the VBS-GBS…and I became the orthopaedic section president. This gives me quite some contacts with the colleagues of other European countries, but also with EFORT and other specialties. And the challenges we face are also theirs!
Thus, next to more traditional orthopaedic subjects, still to decide, during the 2023 Orthopaedica Belgica Congress, an EFORT forum will be organized on diversity…Let me rephrase on the strength of diversity, versatility…not just gender but ethnicity, race, culture and not just us the doctors but also adaptation to the diversity of our patients or like the Anglo-Saxons say « guidelines applied to the population to treat »
And with the same idea to continue with another European issue : the importance on paying attention to the most fragile in our society, the ones that might be left out of a system of standardisation, uniformity, accreditation : the handicapped child/adult, the very elderly, the poor, the refugee, and even the ones in developing countries…and back to diversity…
In orthopaedics with the « MDR » regulation we already have difficulties in finding implants for some of these patients…
The waste in our operating rooms in the name of patient security is another important issue and next EFORT meeting will be: Green, sustainable and innovative….
Well this might well be a subject for my successor
